Downtown construction has scrambled the usual Main Street summer this year. The interesting stuff didn't disappear. It spread out. New restaurants landed on Route 58 and the Peconic Ave waterfront, The Suffolk carried the weeknight calendar, and Alive on 25 came back with a modified footprint. If you already live here, the map you used last July doesn't quite work anymore. Here's what changed and how to plan around it.
The block party is back, but smaller on purpose
Alive on 25 returns to Main Street on July 9 and August 6, 5 to 9 p.m., with an August 12 rain date. Organizers have said the 2026 footprint is intentionally smaller because of the construction downtown. The Downtown Crawl starts at 4 p.m. and runs through 9 to 11 p.m. after hours, pushing music and drink specials to side-street venues that don't usually get the Main Street foot traffic.
A special fireworks display over the river behind the town square is scheduled for July 18. If you can only pick one Saturday to be downtown this summer, that's the one.
Circle the Grand Float Parade on July 4 at 11 a.m., stepping off from Railroad Avenue through downtown. Fireworks that night move east to South Jamesport Beach at 9:30 p.m. over Peconic Bay. The night before, on July 3 at 6:30 p.m., Riverhead Raceway at 1797 Old Country Road runs its 76th Year Celebration with a Flying Dutchman tribute and its own fireworks program.
Where the new food actually is
Nine notable openings in the last twelve months, and only two of them are on Main Street. That's the story.

Buoy One's move is the one worth knowing about even if you weren't a regular at the old location. It sits on Peconic Avenue in the former Riverwalk Café, next to the planned downtown redevelopment area, which means a seafood dinner now pairs naturally with a walk along the river instead of a walk across a parking lot.
Jamesport Farm Brewery is also under new ownership this season. Brothers Kirk and Joe Weiss and Nick Giuffre, the team behind Long Island Farm Brewery at Waterdrinker Family Farms, took the helm. If you'd written the brewery off after the last season, it's worth another visit.
The Suffolk is doing the heavy weeknight lifting
With Main Street's usual sidewalk energy interrupted, The Suffolk at 118 E. Main Street has effectively become downtown's living room for the summer. The lineup is dense enough that you can build a whole month around it without repeating a genre:
- Classic Stones Live (Keith Call and Bernie Bollendorf with an eight-piece band)
- Don McLean, celebrating America's 250th
- The Wailers, mid-May run
- Lords of 52nd Street, Liberty DeVitto and Russell Javors reuniting the Billy Joel band
- DIO RULES, a 90-minute Ronnie James Dio tribute with a portion of proceeds going to the Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund
- The Doo Wop Project, "Echoes of the Street"
Tickets and the full calendar live at thesuffolk.org. The venue's programming has been the most reliable weekly draw on Main Street this summer, which is worth keeping in mind if you're deciding whether it's worth the trip on a random Thursday.
The Route 58 corridor is quietly having a moment
Three of the year's most-anticipated openings, Shake Shack, Dave's Hot Chicken, and QDOBA, are all clustered on the Route 58 side rather than downtown. Add in Hampton Gyro at the traffic circle and Tanger's Memorial Day Weekend Foodie Fest, and you have a corridor that's carrying more of the family dinner traffic than it did a year ago. If you have kids and you're trying to avoid the parade-day parking scramble on Main Street, this is where the summer plays.
Shake Shack's hours are the detail worth flagging: 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., daily. That's earlier-close than the chain runs in most markets, so a post-beach dinner run doesn't work the way it might in the city. Plan accordingly.
Beyond food: what else opened
Northwell Health cut the ribbon on a 12,000-square-foot Behavioral Health Wellness Center at 877 East Main Street last June. Since June 1, 2025, it's been running an intensive Partial Hospitalization Program for children and teens ages 10 to 17 alongside traditional outpatient services for ages 5 to 21. If you're a parent who's been driving west for that kind of care, the drive got shorter.
The Riverhead Free Library is running a three-session chair boxing series with instructor Johnathan Arroyo on July 1, 8, and 15, gloves provided. It's the sort of small, free program that only shows up if someone's paying attention to the library's calendar, which most people aren't.
For families with kids in the 11-to-15 range, the North Fork Arts Center has a weeklong improv comedy workshop with Katy Berry running July 6 to 10, ending in a live show for family on July 11.
A Friday walk that actually works this summer
If you have out-of-town family coming through and you want a downtown night that accounts for the construction, here's a workable sequence:
- 6:00 p.m. Dinner at Buoy One on Peconic Avenue. Ask for a table with the river view. Skip the Main Street parking mess entirely.
- 7:30 p.m. Walk five minutes up to The Suffolk for a show. Check thesuffolk.org that morning to confirm what's on.
- 10:00 p.m. Late scoop at Ben & Jerry's at 87 East Main, which stays open through the summer evening crowd. On an Alive on 25 night, this is when the Downtown Crawl side-street venues start filling in.
- Alternative Saturday route. If it's July 4 weekend, flip the plan: parade at 11 a.m. from Railroad Avenue, lunch at Hampton Gyro on the traffic circle to sidestep downtown, then drive out to South Jamesport Beach for 9:30 p.m. fireworks over the Peconic.
What this all means if you live here
The Riverhead summer of 2026 rewards residents who know two things most weekend visitors don't: which venues absorbed the Main Street disruption and which corridor absorbed the new restaurant growth. The Suffolk and Peconic Avenue took the first; Route 58 and Tanger took the second. If you plan around that split instead of assuming everything still centers on the same three blocks, the season opens back up.
Sadly, a few longtime spots didn't make it. Star Confectionery closed its downtown location earlier in the cycle, tied in part to rising downtown rents according to the Riverhead News Review's year-in-review coverage. That's worth mentioning because it's the flip side of the same story: the construction period is squeezing older tenants at the same time it's pushing new energy to the edges.
